Noisy Refrigerator Operation – Unfamiliar Sounds

Today’s refrigerators are built with smaller, more efficient compressors. These are not louder but do produce a higher pitch which can be mistaken as louder in some operating environments.

A fan is required for normal air flow in and around the fresh and frozen food compartments.

Cabinet vibration can occur if the refrigerator is not level or if the refrigerator is installed on a weak floor.

A sizzling sound can occur in the freezer compartment when defrost water drips on the defrost mechanism.

Popping or cracking sounds may be heard as metal parts expand and contract.

Bubbling or gurgling sounds (like water boiling) result when the refrigerant boils off as it circulates.

A dripping sound can occur as water drips into the defrost pan beneath the refrigerator during the defrost cycle. This sound only occurs during the defrost cycle.

A clicking noise can sometimes be heard as the defrost timer begins and ends the defrost cycle.

The automatic icemaker also produces several sounds.

  • Buzzing of the water valve.
  • Water running as the ice tray fills.
  • Rattling of the ice cubes as they fall into the ice bin.

Longer Baking Times and Inconsistent Browning? – Q&A

Q: It takes longer for items to bake in my new range, plus the items don’t brown consistently. What can be done?

A: Several things can affect bake times and browning.

As cooking appliances get older, it is not uncommon for the oven temperature to shift. As a result, it is natural to gradually adapt cooking times, temperatures and habits to that change. Then, when baking in a new oven with proper temperature calibration, results may not be as expected.

An easy way to check if the range or wall oven is operating properly is to bake a standard box white cake mix. Following the package directions and baking times should provide a cake that is done and evenly browned.

PAN SELECTION AND PLACEMENT

Pan Finish

Dark pans absorb heat which results in a browner, crispier crust. These types of pans are commonly used for pies and breads. It may be necessary to reduce the oven temperature 25°F for good results if baking  cakes, cookies, etc.

Shiny pans reflect heat which results in lighter, more delicate browning. Cakes and cookies require this type of pan.

Glass pans absorb heat slowly but hold it well. When glass pans are used for baking, lower the recommended temperature by 25°F. However, this is not required for pies and casseroles.

Incorrect Rack Position in Oven

For single rack baking, center the rack so the food is in the middle of the oven. For multiple rack baking, check the User’s Guide for recommendations.

If food is placed on a rack toward the top of the oven, top browning may be too dark. If food is placed on a rack located near the bottom of the oven, the food may be too dark on the bottom.

Incorrect Pan Placement on the Rack

Allow 1-2 inches of space around each pan and between pans and the oven walls. Placement of the pans should not interfere with airflow.

If baking on more than one rack, place the pans so that one is not directly over another except when baking cookies using convection bake.

OTHER BAKING TIPS

*Preheating is necessary for baked goods such as breads, cookies and cakes. It is not necessary for casseroles, meat, etc.

To preheat, set the oven to the recommended baking temperature, not higher. For ovens without an indicator light or signal allow 10-15 minutes for preheating.

*Most recipes provide minimum and maximum baking times such as “bake 35 to 45 minutes.” DO NOT open the oven door to check until the minimum time has elapsed.

Oven “peeking” drops the temperature approximately 25-30°F each time. This wastes energy and can increase baking times. If you need to check on foods in the oven, look through the window (if equipped) in the oven door rather than opening the door.

*Aluminum foil should NOT be placed on the bottom of the oven or completely cover an oven rack. It will block the air flow and transfer of heat.

If foil is used to catch spillovers from pies and casseroles, place a piece that is slightly larger than the cooking utensil on the rack directly below the rack with the food.

*Use tested recipes from dependable cookbooks. Be sure to use fresh ingredients, measure accurately, mix as instructed and use the recommended pan size.

Are Your Glasses Turning a Blue-Purple Color? – Q & A

Q: I’ve noticed that my glasses are turning a blue-purple color. Why is this happening and what can I do?

A: The color change to blue, purple, pink or brown is an indication that etching has begun. This is a permanent film that occurs in unusual circumstances and causes glassware to pit or erode. In advanced stages, the glasses will appear frosted, spotted or cloudy.

TO IDENTIFY

To verify that the film is etching, soak the glass approximately 15 minutes in undiluted white vinegar. Rinse and dry. If the film is not removed, it is etching. If the film is removed, it is possibly hard water filming.

CAUSES

Certain types of glassware will etch in any dishwasher with the combination of soft water (especially mechanically softened), an excessive amount of detergent, heat and prerinsing. There is no way to predict what glassware may be affected by etching as there is no relationship to the cost or quality of the glass.

TO PREVENT

1.     Since etching usually happens in soft water (0-3 grains), lower the amount of detergent used.

When the normal or longer wash cycles are selected, place the recommended amount of detergent in both cups. When shorter cycles are selected, place detergent in the main wash cup only.

2.     Lower the water temperature so that it enters the dishwasher at approximately 130° – 140°F. Check the water temperature by placing a candy or meat thermometer in a glass and letting it fill with water from the hot water faucet in the kitchen sink. Let the water run until the temperature stops rising. If it is over 140°F, adjust the water heater.

3.     Avoid using a water heating option such as Temp Boost, Sani Rinse, Power Boost, Power Scrub or Sani-Wash.

4.     Avoid using a heated dry option.

5.     Do not manually prerinse dishes before loading in the dishwasher. This will aggravate etching.

TO REMOVE

There is no way to remove the filmy appearance caused by etching – the damage is permanent. However, by following the previous recommendations, future damage may be prevented.
